Svoboda Special Issue
The Fall 2020 issue of Theatre and Performance Design will celebrate the centenary of the birth of Josef Svoboda. The editors invite articles that shed fresh light on one of the most important and influential scenographers of the 20th century. We are particularly interested in articles that examine the impact of his work on subsequent generations and how his scenography, especially in the realm of lighting and projection, may have been a precursor for today’s digital design.
We would also welcome articles about current productions around the world that demonstrate the impact of his work, whether this influence is intentional or not. His work has been well documented, but we would be open to articles that re-evaluate certain productions, or his work more broadly, from the vantage point of today’s scenographic aesthetics and practices as well as recontextualizing and resituating his work in light of current political and social realities.
Proposals should take the form of a 300 word abstract to be submitted to editorial associate Nick Tatchell at firstname.lastname@example.org by 31 January 2020. For accepted proposals the deadline for full articles, 6.000-8.000 words, or alternative forms of submission is 15 June 2020.
